For decades, the military fired explosives on Vieques. The US citizens who live there still face the consequences

When Carmen Valencia was five years old, troops came banging on her door. Her mother grabbed a long machete. “I had no idea what was going on, but I thought, if they come in here, they’re going to kill us.”
Now 78, Valencia has lived most of her life on Vieques, one of the Caribbean’s most picturesque islands, under the thunder of bombs. They roared from navy planes just over the hill by her mother’s house, leaving the smell of smoke hanging thick in the air.
She was even more frightened of the troops, who would stalk her neighborhood looking for women to harass.
But Valencia and her whole family are US citizens. Vieques is part of Puerto Rico, a US territory. She wasn’t living in an enemy country – just a 52-square-mile island of farms and cattle ranches, ringed by pristine gold beaches and crystal waters.

El lunes 1 de mayo celebraremos 20 años sin BOMBAS en Vieques. La celebración será en la entrada del Refugio, que era la puerta del Campamento García. El bombardeo fue llevado a cabo por la Marina de los Estados Unidos durante más de 60 años, enfermando a los residentes de Vieques y destruyendo nuestro entorno natural.
Frente a esa puerta, se encontraba el Campamento de Paz y Justicia, donde miles de personas vinieron a hacer piquete, marchar, cantar acostados y rezar por el fin de las prácticas militares.
Gracias a la lucha del pueblo y a la fuerza de la desobediencia civil, el bombardeo se detuvo el 1 de mayo de 2003.
¡La lucha continúa por la paz y la justicia para Vieques!
No descansaremos hasta que se limpien las tierras, tengamos servicios médicos de primera clase, haya viviendas asequibles para todos, el transporte marítimo sea confiable y digno, y la gente de Vieques sea la propietaria y beneficiaria del desarrollo de esta Isla Nena.
