All ferries leave from the new TERMINAL in CEIBA (Fajardo terminal was closed on October 31, 2018).
The schedule is available at www.porferry.com. They don’t always show the schedule for many months in advance. This site will show you if the boats are running on time.
Although you will hear advice not to take the ferry, 99% of the time the ferry will get you to Vieques with delays no more than an hour. Although, as of April 12, 2019, you can buy your ticket online one month in advance, I recommend to buy it at the ferry terminal. Why?
- Tickets bought at the ferry terminal are cheaper: only $2 per person without the $3.35 service fee. Online non-residents pay $5.35 each ticket.
- They are usually available at the terminal.
- Not all trips are sold online – only trips offered by the private boats.
- Electronic tickets are not able to be changed or refunded.
- If you still want to buy your ticket online, visit www.proferry.com
If you get an electronic ticket and do not make that time, you will not be able to change it. So save the hassle and buy it at the ferry dock. You should buy your ticket at the dock about an hour before the boat departs and be prepared that it could leave late. Read this thoroughly if you are planning to take the ferry.
The cargo boats also take passengers but they take longer and often run behind schedule. The passenger boats take only 35 minutes and mostly run on time.

Cargo boats also take passengers. If you take the private passenger boat (not the cargo boat) the boat ride usually takes only 35 minutes.
Buying tickets in advance is not usually necessary. Sometimes boats leaving Ceiba can sell out. Residents are given preference in this case. Again, this very rarely happens. Ground transportation after 7 PM can be somewhat difficult. Car rental companies do not allow rental cars to be taken on the ferry AND it is difficult to get a reservation to take a car on the ferry.
